So for those of you who aren't "in the know" Myself, Jeremy Kessler and Andy Frech have been recording an album for the Past 29 days, for submission to the RPM Challenge.

The Challenge is basically to record an album during the Month of February. We started February 1st with a blank slate and did all the recording, arranging, composing, playing between the 1st and the 29th. What we finished with was FREBRUARY, which is either the name of our collaboration, or album, or both, but it makes seems to just make sense either way.

Please listen, I think we're all quite proud at what we managed to accomplish basically using up all the spare we could muster time between our day jobs and social requirements (which, if you can imagine, doesn't leave much)

I sincere

CHARLIE HADEN

LIBERATION MUSIC ORCHESTRA

The Liberation Music Orchestra is a large Jazz ensemble led by American bassist Charlie Haden, and stacked with Jazz heavies including composer/arranger Carla Bley, Don Cherry (Trumpeter on Ornette Coleman's THE SHAPE OF JAZZ TO COME,) Dewey Redman, and others.

The album reflect's Haden's concerns of US miltary backed conflicts, in this case primarily the Spanish Civil War and Vietnam. This is the first of the groups' recordings, and easily my favourite.

Four tracks are actual arrangements of Spanish Civil War songs, and the last song, my favourite on the record, is a traditional song: WE SHALL OVERCOME

Unfortunately, online examples are hard to find, the best I can do is this short 30 second imeem clip, and my own DJ FRESHIE arrangemenet of We Shall Overcome.

I don't really do it justice, but it's a beautiful song on it's own, maybe this gives you some sort of idea.

JANUARY ThirtyZero, 2008

First off, I would like to give my personal props to everyone who made it out to the show last Thursday, it was a pleasure to grace you all with much cowbell. As well, I'd like to give props out to Rabbit Season for opening and for being a dynamite trio. I was beyond impressed, I like what they do, and you should check them out HERE

Here's the freshest entry in my "older albums you should be listening to" LOG 2.0!

TOM WAITS

SWORDFISHTROMBONES

If RAIN DOGS is the essential Tom Waits album (and it is,) then in my eyes SWORDFISHTROMBONES is the "more essentialler" album. The first album Tom self-produced, and released in 1983, swordfishtrombones (almost as fun to type as it is to say) is as "Tom Waits" as Tom Waits can get.

There's not much I can say to do it justice, aside from it's the most beautiful marriage of Louis Armstrong and Captain Beefheart I've ever heard. Here's the best track on the album: IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD:
